Highlighting Dark Hair for the Most Natural Look

By Dr. Stephanie Garcia
Dark hair is everything. It’s rich. It’s gorgeous.  But even dark-haired beauties dream of lighter tresses from time to time. If the idea of coloring your hair frightens you, believe me, you are not alone. Fortunately, there are several different ways to achieve highlights on dark hair, while minimizing damage, and maximizing your natural beauty!
At Home Hair Color
For YEARS I refused to color my own hair. I always relied on my hairstylist to do it for me; that is until I discovered Madison Reed’s at home hair color. Talk about an easy way to freshen up your look! I recommend checking out the Light Works Balayage Highlighting Kit. This easy-to-use, two-step kit, offers the perfect amount of lightening without damaging or stripping hair of its luster and shine. There are three shades to choose from for medium to dark hair, then you simply use the wishbone applicator to achieve the ultimate “salon look”.  In my opinion, this kit offers the perfect amount of lightening while still retaining a natural, enhanced appearance. Clip In Extensions
If highlighting your hair is not an option, consider picking up some clip-in hair extensions!  Amazon and Sally’s Beauty Supply both have a variety of synthetic and natural hair extensions to choose from. Look for a color that is slightly lighter than your current color and maybe pick up a pack that is slightly darker as well. This will add depth and dimension to your hair, while giving it added volume and bounce. Here are some great options from both retailers:

Seek Out a Professional Hairstylist
For all my virgin-haired angels out there, I highly recommend entrusting your first couple of hair colors to a professional. They’re educated in how to properly color and treat hair, especially for those seeking a more natural appearance. Once you get acclimated to the process, then you can consider doing it at home. Until then, leave your mane to the pros!
Although your natural hair color is always a winner, highlights are a great way to update your look, especially for the quickly-approaching spring and summer months. But, before taking the plunge, be sure to do your Googles –learn the maintenance, cost, time, and product ingredients used in the hair color you select! Armed with knowledge, and the proper tools, you’ll get the results you’re craving, while maintaining healthy, gorgeous hair!
Happy highlighting!
