What’s In Your Hair Spray Bottle & Why It Really Matters

By Sabrina Perkins of seriouslynatural.org

Every natural-haired beauty needs a refresher spray- a mixture of water, oil, and conditioner that works perfectly for her curls!  It’s a quick and necessary pick-me-up for your curls, whether you use it at night before bed, first thing in the morning to wake your curls up, or throughout the day to keep them luxuriating.  The right blends not only add moisture, but also seal that moisture in with emollient oils like coconut and avocado.
I relied on my refresher spray heavily throughout the day when I first went natural, but find that I use it less now that my hair has found its groove.  I mostly use it to revive 2nd, 3rd or even 4th day hair, now. I am also noticing that with the changing seasons, I must alter my mixture to accommodate for the fluctuations in humidity, sun and wind exposure, and my living arrangements (indoor heating or AC). We live in Denver, CO and use a lot of heat so that means a lot of dryness in my house!
Why do you need a hair spray bottle when natural?
The obvious reason is that our hair needs to maintain moisture to stay healthy and look great. Also, it allows you to shape, moisturize and stretch your curls and coils without soaking your entire head. Spritzing your hair is not just for a wash and go, lovelies. Twists, Afros, puffs and many other styles benefit from a few pumps of your favorite concoction. And as always, trial and error will dictate just what you want in your hair mister.
Always remember that water should be the primary component of your mix, and a few drops of an oil and/or highly water-based conditioner are meant to compliment.  Too much of either the oil or conditioner will not only clog your spray bottle, but will be too heavy on the hair to refresh the style. If opting for heavier concoctions, buy OTC products like hair lotions or serums to give your hair what it needs.
Here’s what’s in my spray bottle this season (Summer):

  1. Distilled Water
  2. Lavender oil

Were you looking for more?  Sorry!  I spritz my hair, and then lightly add some Oyin Handmade Hair Dew using the praying hands method of application (from root to tip).  I was super low maintenance with my hair spritz this past summer, and plan to continue using it this fall, along with this one–
Fall Mix:

  1. Distilled Water
  2. Lavender oil
  3. Knot Today Conditioner
  4. Jojoba Oil

Now for fall, I increase a few things but make sure you understand that I still make water the main component. I do add the Kinky Curly Knot Today to the bottle because it is not too thick and I only add a couple of drops. I always add a few drops of Jojoba Oil, because it is my favorite carrier oil after coconut, and a lighter one that my hair responds to very well.
So I am steady listening to my hair and using what works, but expect my fall concoction to be somewhat different from my winter.  So, naturals, what was in your spray bottle this summer, and what are you mixing up for Fall?!
Stay moisturized Naturals,
Sabrina
