If you’re rocking natural hair, you’ve probably heard about oil rinsing. True to its name, oil rinsing is a technique that involves rinsing hair with oil to help lock in moisture during your wash regimen. Oil rinsing also helps to soften hair, reduce tangling and add extra shine.
There are two common ways to oil rinse: between shampooing and conditioning or as the final step of your hair routine. Simply massage the oil into the hair, from roots to tips, and allow to sit for 15 minutes. You can also wear a shower cap to really lock in the oil.
If you applied before conditioning, rinse out with warm water to keep cuticles open and follow up with your conditioner. If you applied after conditioning, rinse with cool water to help close cuticles and seal in moisture.
Because you are only rinsing with water, you want to ensure you use lightweight oils that don’t just sit on top of the hair, but actually penetrate the hair shaft for deep hydration. Scroll down for five oils to help you benefit from this hair hack.

5 Oils To Penetrate The Hair Shaft

Coconut
Not only does it smell good, but coconut oil does wonders for the hair (and body). It is considered one of the best oils for hair growth with its high amount of essential vitamins and fatty acids. This oil penetrates hair quickly to help rehydrate and repair dry, brittle, damaged, or dull hair.

Argan
Argan oil, also known as Moroccan oil, is great for dry or coarse hair. Beauty lovers call it “liquid gold” for its rich golden hue and its nourishing properties such as fatty acids, antioxidants, and Vitamin E to help soften and hydrate hair.

Grapeseed
High in vitamin E, grapeseed oil can treat brittle and weak hair. It can also help with hair loss thanks to the oil’s DHT-blocking properties. While lightweight, this moisturizing goodie will have the maximum benefit after the conditioning process to help with dandruff-prone hair and reduce scalp inflammation.

Olive
Olive oil isn’t just for cooking! Strengthen and add shine, softness, and volume to your hair with this versatile oil. It not only coats the hair shaft, but penetrates the shaft to keep in keratin and protect your hair. Olive oil is ideal for those with damaged, dull, or dry hair. Some people even replace their conditioner with olive oil instead. Opt for organic, extra virgin olive oil for the best results

Avocado
Another foodie essential, this oil is just as beneficial for the hair. It’s packed with fatty acids and essential vitamins to nourish and strengthen hair deep in the shaft to prevent breakage and add lasting hydration.
These five options are a great way to reap the benefits of oil rinsing. You can also mix oils to create your own blend that works best for your scalp and hair! Whichever you choose, just make sure they are all natural.
