Often associated with the “quiet luxury trend,” there are two things that make the clean girl aesthetic: a low bun that’s neatly pulled back and minimal makeup that’s all about glowy skin. In reality, it’s a classist take on a look that Black and Latino communities have been wearing for decades.
Having your hair slicked back into a bun was a way to manage their stubborn, beautiful textured hair. And as for that glowy skin? You can thank the Latines for that, too. Heavy makeup wasn’t ideal for places with humid climates, like the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. So, they opted for minimal makeup.
