Before it was trending, it was tradition.
Before it was monetized, it was ours.
Black beauty has always lived at the center of our culture, in the kitchen with a hot comb on the stove, in the living room getting your scalp greased, in the beauty supply store aisles grabbing braiding hair and barrettes (don’t forget the lip gloss at checkout).
This Black History Month, we honor the love language that is Black beauty.
Black beauty has always been a cultural language that shows up in how we style our hair, how we layer our jewelry, how we design our nails, and the pride we take in stepping outside knowing the fit is intentional from head to toe.
As we honor 100 years of Black History Month, we recognize that beauty and style have always been a part of how Black Americans express identity, build community, and shape influence, not as surface level aesthetics, but as language. As art. As architecture.
Happy 100th Black History Month.
