Therapy comes in many forms. For me, it’s a self-care oasis away from screens and people. And because I love makeup, that sanctuary is my vanity.
Let’s be real: my past setups were a chaotic line of hand-me-down furniture, TV trays, and even a single dresser drawer. They fit my budget, but never quite fit me. In 2020, with some unexpected free time, I had an epiphany—no more making do. It was time to design my dream vanity.
Here’s six steps I took to bring my beauty sanctuary to life:
1. Find a Room With the Right Light
I started by rearranging my bedroom to clear a prime spot directly in front of the windows; natural light is non-negotiable for any serious makeup moment. The area was not huge, which presented a real puzzle: how do you maximize a small footprint without the space feeling cluttered or cramped?
2. Learn from my Mistake
Spoiler Alert: I did not get it right the first time. I rushed, bought the very first piece that fit the dimensions, and quickly realized it was all wrong. It ended up being donated, and I was back at square one.
3. Research and Refine Before You Begin
Lesson learned! I got specific about what I wanted: a compact, white vanity with a glass top that did not come with a four-figure price tag. With that vision locked in, the search began in earnest.
4. Assembly Required (unfortunately)
I finally found the perfect piece online. When it arrived, it came in—no lie—about 300 pieces! (Granted, that included the screws, but they still count! ) Cue a very real moment of standing in the middle of the room surrounded by hardware and questioning every decision that led to this point. By some miracle, we got through it.Next time? I’m hiring a Task Rabbit.
5. Add Some Personal Flare
Once assembled, it still didn’t quite scream “ME!” That’s when the embellishments began (you might notice a theme):
- Rhinestone tape
- Sparkling silver drawer liners
- Crystal skull drawer pulls
- Rhinestone skull stickers
- Skull containers for eye and lip liners
- Covered makeup brush containers (to keep the dust away!)
- A mini skincare fridge (with rhinestone skull sticker)
- A great, high-quality makeup mirror

6. Build Up, Not Out
Because the desk is small, I maximized the vertical space. I built upward, placing a perfume tray on top of the mini fridge and a lotion tray on top of my makeup brush drawers.
To be honest, my oasis remains an ongoing project. Every few months I’ll add or subtract items—like a recent, extremely narrow rolling cart with DIY drawers for my hair tools.
But here’s the real deal: the moment I sit on my fluffy bench and turn on the right music—spa tracks for skincare, upbeat dance music for makeup—all my stress melts away. Right there, in a space built intentionally for me and by me, is where I find my peace of mind.
