Let’s face it – surviving the holidays has become something of an art. There’s so much to do and so little time, that we often find ourselves foregoing our usual haircare routines just to keep up.
That can be really bad news for your already finicky curly hair but, as always, we’ve got your back! Here are some tips to get your curly hair safely through the season.
1.De-pot or Go with Travel Size
If you’re traveling for the holidays, buy or reuse empty travel-size bottles and de-pot small amounts of your haircare products to carry along. You can also check for sample-size or travel-size versions of your usual products or suitable alternatives.
2.Become A Co-Wash Pro
Lack of time or convenience (if you are away from home for the holidays) can mean cutting back on how often you wash your hair. That could be a good thing since many shampoos strip hair of its natural oils and dry it out. The answer? Conditioner-only or “co-washing” your hair. It’s a one-step process using your regular conditioner or a cleansing conditioner made exactly for this purpose.
3.Choose Materials Wisely
Some materials are kinder to curly hair than others. It’s why curly girls swear by their silk or satin pillowcases. But, what about your hats’ inner lining or the headscarves you’ll be rocking this holiday season? Ensure they are made from curly-hair-friendly materials, as well. Silk, satin, mohair, and cashmere are all good choices. They keep hair moisturized, limit tangling, and shield hair from breakage.
4.Work Those Knots, Twists, and Braids
Use knots, twists or braids between outings to prevent moisture loss, while keeping hair shiny and frizz-free. These protective styles are also great for sleeping in since they lessen damaging friction between your pillow slip and your hair. Loose knots, twists or braids are also a neat seasonal trick if you wear a hat while venturing out in chilly, drying weather. Once you get to your destination, gently work your hair loose.
5.Minimize Heat
This is one of those curly haircare basics you might be tempted to go against when you are pressed for time during the holidays. Even if you are in a rush, do your best to avoid quick drying your hair with too much direct heat. Ideally, you should use a diffuser to get your hair about 75% dry first, then air dry it the rest of the way.
6.Take The Inside-Out Approach
The best way to take care of your hair is from the inside. It’s tempting to overindulge during the holidays but do your best to incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, and nutrient-rich healthy foods, as well. Exercise and sufficient restful sleep will also keep your body healthy and reduce stress – both of which are good news for your curly hair!
What measures are you taking to keep your curls in tip-top shape this holiday season?
