Nameplate Jewelry
Nameplate jewelry has origins as far back as the Victorian Era, but in Black and Latine culture, the nameplate trend dates all the way back to WWII. For people of color and working class, wearing your name was a way to be seen and embrace individuality.
In the 1980s and 1990s, all forms of nameplate jewelry, from necklaces to rings, saw a rise in popularity thanks to hip-hop culture, but it was Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City who brought nameplate jewelry to mainstream culture with her gold “Carrie” necklace.
