The brown liner/clear gloss combo is synonymous with Mexican-American Chola culture originating in East Los Angeles, but the look goes back to the 1940s. Back then, Black and brown people wore the dark lip combo because it went against traditional beauty standards and symbolized resistance and identity.

It also gained popularity in the ‘90s when BIPOC celebrities wore the lip combo on the red carpet because traditional nude colors didn’t work for their skin. Today, it seems like just about everyone wants to emulate this look, especially after a certain celebrity posted a TikTok tutorial on achieving her “signature brownie-glazed lips.”
