Naturalistas know the quest for healthy hair goes beyond finding the perfect conditioner (really, it does!) We also need proper tools that won’t fry, break, or stress our textured tresses. So, we connected with Miko Branch, CEO of natural haircare brand Miss Jessie’s, to get intel on must-have tools for every step of the styling process for healthy curls, kinks and coils.

Here are her top six recommendations that every curlfriend should have in their hair arsenal — from the loosest waves to the kinkiest coils. Trust — your hair will thank you.

Microfiber towel

Say no to your cotton towels! While perfect for drying your skin, rubbing the cotton fibers can actually damage and break your tresses. Instead, “soak up the excess water from your freshly washed tresses by patting it with a microfiber towel,” says Branch. “Never rub your curls.”

Wide-tooth comb

Detangling kinks and curls takes time and the right tools. “Practice patience, and love on your tresses,” says Branch. “Always detangle a head full of matted knots with the right moisturizing conditioner — first with your fingers then very gently with a wide-tooth comb.”

Hair Clips

To help with the detangling (and styling) process, make sure to “use sturdy hair clips to section your textured hair,” Branch shares. This will make detangling a breeze, help you use less product, and ensure the product is evenly coated throughout hair.

Diffuser

“Air dry is always the best dry,” says Branch, but if you must blowdry, then “use a diffuser attachment.” She also recommends using the low or medium settings. This will help reduce the amount of direct heat on your hair and scalp. on your blow dryer. (And, don’t forget a heat protectant!)

Continuous Mist Spray Bottle

Spray bottles are a must for curls, kinks and coils. “Refresh your crown of curls with a refillable bottle that offers a continuous fine mist of water,” says Branch. “You won’t soak your entire head.” This is also great during the detangling process to keep tresses damp. “And, feel free to add a little bit of oil to glisten your gorgeous mane.”

Silk or satin pillowcases

“Replace the cotton pillowcase that pulls on your hair with a silk or satin one that is much more gentle,” says Branch. This is a must-have for naturalistas who can’t be bothered with bonnets and headwraps at night. Not only will it help to reduce breakage, but it also “helps maintain your curls’ natural oils.” Sounds like a win/win to us!
