With “outside” officially opening back up, expect this summer season to be lit. That, of course, includes more fun under the sun. And, while most of us know the importance of protecting our skin with SPF sunscreen, we often forget to prep and protect our hair, as well.

Sure, those natural sun-kissed highlights look amazing, but the sun damage can wreak havoc on our tresses, causing dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, and even thinning. But, don’t fret. We are all about living our best hair life. So, read on for a few tips to keep your hair healthy and hydrated.

Ditch The Heat

Avoid as much heat on your hair as possible in the warmer months. The sun will already dry out your hair more naturally than in the winter, so opt for hairstyles that embrace your hair’s natural texture and require minimal heat application. If you must blow-dry, do so on low to medium heat. Not only will this minimize damage, it will also result in more moisture retention and more volume.

Protect Your Ends

Give your hair a break by upping your protective style game. Braids, passion twists, crochet, and other installs tend to be great go-tos for maximum slay with minimal effort. But you don’t have to sit for hours getting styled up to prevent hair damage. You can also try quick styles like Bantu knots, high buns and top knots, and twisted updos. It’s all about keeping your ends — the oldest and driest part of your hair — tucked and protected. This will help prevent breakage and increase overall length retention.

Drink Water

If your hair is thirsty, your body probably is, too. Dehydration not only contributes to dandruff and dry hair, it actually stunts your hair’s growth. So, drink up!

Use Sunscreen

Yes, your hair needs sunscreen to protect it from UV rays, especially if you aren’t a hat person.  Those sun-kissed highlights are actually the result of the sun bleaching your hair and damaging the cuticle. Go the DIY natural route by adding oils like grapeseed,  raspberry seed and carrot seed to your haircare regimens to help protect your hair. Or try something off the shelf, like  Davine SU Hair Milk ($32) or Philip Kingsley Daily Damage Defense Extreme Conditioning Spray ($29).

Deep Condition

Deep conditioners are a must all year-round, but are extra important if you’re hitting the beach or enjoying extended time in the sun. Make sure to do a deep condition or hair mask treatment each week to ensure your hair gets the nutrients and moisture it needs to stay healthy and hydrated.
