Finding a good moisturizer just might be the holy grail of skincare (right behind erasing blemishes). We’ve all grown up knowing the power of a good lotion, but it seems not everyone knows that oils can serve as must-haves to not just hydrate, but also nourish your skin.

They tend to get a bad rap for being too greasy or staining clothes, but that doesn’t have to be the case. The right amount of an oil like argan or sunflower will absorb directly into the skin to help keep it supple and hydrated. Not to mention, a natural glow. So, if you’re on the fence about whether to add oils to your regimen, here are three reasons to make your skin happy.
Seal in Moisture
While it doesn’t necessarily hydrate the skin on its own, body oil has occlusive properties that help seal in moisture already on your skin. Oils also imitate the natural lipids in our skin that work to prevent dryness and flakiness allowing for longer hydration and smoother skin.
Clean Beauty
Body oils are just that, oil. That means you don’t have to worry about any suspicious processed chemicals or unidentifiable ingredients often found in lotions and other moisturizers.
Combat Aging and Sun Damage
Oils that are high in antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are also great for healing and slowing down the aging processes. Antioxidants help reduce fine lines and wrinkles while fatty acids help to calm, strengthen, and rebuild the skin’s surface layers.
Ready to get your body glow on? Great! Dermatologists suggest moisturizing when your skin is damp, ideally right after you shower. Mix and match your favorite lighter oils and, starting with a dime-sized amount, massage into the skin. You can even mix in a few drops with your favorite moisturizer to double up on hydration or apply after lotion to help seal in the lotion’s hydrating properties.
